THE GUARDIAN OF THE HUT
Marked by a memorable experience in New Caledonian, Michael Husser’s “street art” work brilliantly reflects the identity, the history and an important aspect of New Caledonia’s culture.
A symbol of the Melanesian tradition, the Kanak face shown here in a resolutely contemporary style, is adorned with patterns inspired by bamboo engravings, widely seen and used in local art. These faces are particularly found carved on doorframes that mark the entrance of traditional huts from the north to the south of the archipelago.
They are the guardians of the Hut and protectors of those who live there.
